Steve's ALS Restaurant Review #8

ABUELO’S The weather turned a bit warmer and we were not as anxious to hurry home on Friday evening.  Instead, we drove to Abuelo’s. Abuelo’s is located in a shopping center near 86 th and Zionsville Road.  We had been there previously but never with an eye towards gauging accessibility. As you may have guessed from its name, Abuelo’s is a restaurant featuring Mexican food, and quite good food at that.  We started with stuffed mushrooms (maybe a bit spicy).  My wife ordered enchiladas and I had sea bass tacos.  Both of us enjoyed dinner enormously.  (Hint: the taco shells are soft and easily eaten using only one hand.) There was ample handicap parking placed close to the entrance.  My wife offered assistance in gaining entrance through the two sets of front doors.  (Is there a law against automatic door openers at restaurants?)   Once inside, the foyer was spacious and the hostess quickly greeted us and found a booth. ...

Steve's ALS Indy Restaurant Review #7

Driving around, doing Sunday afternoon chores, we decided we were hungry for “linner” –that meal you consume sometime between lunch and dinner.  We hadn’t been for a while, at least since I received my scooter, so we decided to check out Metro Diner. METRO DINER Metro Diner is a small chain with three Indianapolis locations.  The one we visited this time is located on the Butler campus at 4702 Sunset Lane.  The restaurant is part of a building that also houses a parking garage.  It is adjacent to the handicap parking spots for Clowes Hall, which is where we parked.   It was an easy scooter ride to get to the front door of the diner.  Access to the restaurant was courtesy of my wife.  Two doors, and of course, no door opener. Once inside, we were immediately greeted by a hostess who quickly made a booth available.  The aisles were wide and I had no trouble navigating my scooter.  We were able to store the scooter nearby in a space ...

STEVE'S ALS REVIEW #6

For those of you who really like upscale steak houses, stop reading now.  This is going to get really ugly really quickly.  A friend recently presented us with a gift card to Sullivan’s.  We were really happy.  We had not been to the restaurant in this century.  I made reservations and off we went. Here is what we found (remember, my reviews focus mainly on access). SULLIVAN’S Sullivan’s is located at Keystone at the Crossing, in a free standing building separate from the main shopping center.  We were lucky in that a handicap parking space opened up just as we entered the parking lot.  The parking lot itself appears small with heavy reliance on valet parking.  I think the valets use portions of the expansive shopping center parking lot. Our reservations were for 6:15 PM on a Saturday night.  There was a ramp leading to the front door and of course, no automatic door opener.  Another diner was gracious in offering assistance...
